Two Softball Players made West Region All-Tournament!

La Verne Softball

The University of La Verne softball team placed two athletes on the West Region All-Tournament Team concluding action UT Tyler. Senior Jodi Lindsay and junior Melissa Carlson were named to the All-Tournament following their performances at the West Regionals as the Leopards finished among the final four participants in the seven-team field.

Lindsay batted a team-high .556 (5-9) for the Leopards along with two walks in the three games to post a .636 on-base percentage to close out her career. Carlson batted .333 for the tournament along with a .400 on-base percentage. She also was 2-for-2 in stolen base attempts.

Julie Smith

Head Softball Coach

Former U.S. Olympian Julie Smith is in her first season as head coach of the Leopard softball program.

Smith, a decorated softball player at the collegiate, national and international level, was the starting second baseman on the 1996 U.S. Olympic Team that captured the gold medal in Atlanta. She also was a member of two World Championship teams and three Pan American squads that earned gold medals.

Smith has amassed seven years of coaching experience from the club level to the professional ranks. She currently serves as president of Teamsmith, Inc., coaching three of its Amateur Softball Association (ASA) travel teams. She also spent the 2005 season as general manager and head coach of the New York/New Jersey Juggernaut franchise of National Pro Fastpitch (NPF).

Tony Ketelsleger

Assitant Coach

Assistant coach Tony Ketelsleger is in his first season with the Leopard softball program.

Ketelsleger is a retired detective with the Los Angeles Police Department. A former collegiate pitcher and a San Francisco Giants draft pick in 1967,

Ketelsleger has devoted much of his life to softball and has coached several years at both the club and recreational level.

Q. What should I bring to a typical softball camp?

A. For normal softball camps, you come like you would be going to practice or game. Softball glove, bat, hat, uniform and helmet, if you have one.
